Eielson AFB PCS Relocation Guide
Written for military families heading to Fairbanks, Alaska — from someone who's been through enough PCS moves to know what you actually need to hear.
Overview
Eielson Air Force Base sits about 26 miles southeast of Fairbanks in Alaska's interior, and it is genuinely unlike any other assignment you've probably had. The base falls within Fairbanks North Star Borough, and the mission here is serious — Eielson is home to the 354th Fighter Wing and has a long history tied to Pacific Air Forces operations. If you've heard of the "Thunderdome," that's the base's iconic oversized hangar, and yes, it's as impressive in person as it sounds.
What families tell you before you get here is usually some version of: the winters are real, the summers are magic, and you'll either love it or you won't. What they don't always say is that the community is tight-knit, the outdoor life is unlike anything in the Lower 48, and if you come in with the right mindset, this can be one of the best tours of your career. Go in with your eyes open, plan your housing early, and you'll be fine.
BAH & What It Covers Here
Here are the 2026 BAH rates for Eielson (Fairbanks North Star Borough):
| Rank | With Dependents | Without Dependents |
|---|---|---|
| E-5 | $2,436/mo | $1,827/mo |
| E-6 | $2,454/mo | $1,887/mo |
| E-7 | $2,610/mo | $1,989/mo |
| O-3 | $2,937/mo | $2,301/mo |
| O-4 | $3,210/mo | $2,619/mo |
Alaska housing costs are higher than most of the country, and BAH here reflects that to a degree — but the market can still be competitive depending on the time of year and what you're looking for. For specific neighborhoods, what areas make the most sense for your family's situation, or how far your BAH will actually stretch in today's market, reach out and I'll connect you with a local agent who works with military families regularly.
Where Families Live & Commute Times
Most Eielson families spread across a handful of communities along the Richardson Highway and the Fairbanks metro area. Here's the honest breakdown:
- Salcha — 7 min / 7.4 miles to base. About as close as you'll get off-post. Rural and quiet.
- Moose Creek — 7 min / 5.8 miles to base. Even closer by distance, similar feel to Salcha.
- North Pole — 12 min / 10.3 miles. A popular choice for families. Has its own community identity and amenities.
- Badger — 17 min / 14.6 miles. A reasonable middle ground between base proximity and Fairbanks access.
- Fairbanks / South Van Horn — 26 min / roughly 24 miles. The full city experience — more dining, shopping, services — but you're adding commute time daily.
Most families with kids lean toward North Pole or Fairbanks for school and activity access. If you want land and quiet, Salcha and Moose Creek deliver that. No wrong answer here — it comes down to what your family prioritizes.
Schools
I won't invent ratings or school names here — that kind of information changes and you deserve accurate data. Go straight to the source:

Check the schools for the specific communities you're considering, and if you have kids with special needs or are looking for specific programs, that's worth a deeper conversation before you sign a lease or close on a house.
Things to Do & Area Life
This is where Eielson genuinely surprises people. Fairbanks and the surrounding area have a cultural depth and outdoor scene that most folks don't expect.
Get outside. The Chena River Nature Trail is accessible and beautiful, and the UAF Trail System — connected to the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus — gives you miles of maintained trails that the locals use year-round. For the mountain bikers in the family, Ester Dome Singletrack is a legitimate trail system worth exploring. Ester Community Park is another low-key gem for families who just want green space without making a production of it.
Dig into Alaska's culture. The Morris Thompson Cultural & Visitors Center is one of the best free resources in Fairbanks for understanding interior Alaska's indigenous heritage and history — worth visiting early in your tour, not just when family comes to visit. The Museum of the North at Reichardt Park offers a serious look at Alaskan natural and cultural history. The Riverboat Discovery cruise on the Chena and Tanana Rivers is a classic Fairbanks experience — do it once and you'll understand why people talk about it.
The weird and wonderful. The World Ice Art Championships — Ice Alaska is something you truly cannot replicate anywhere else. World-class ice sculptors, massive installations, a competition culture that the whole city rallies around in late winter. Put it on the calendar your first year. And if you want something offbeat and genuinely fun, check out Northern Whimsy and the Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum — the latter has one of the most unusual collections you'll find in any state, military town or otherwise.
Alaska has a way of rewarding the curious. Show up ready to explore and this assignment will give back more than it asks.
Using Your VA Loan Here
The VA loan limit for Fairbanks North Star Borough is $1,249,125. That's your ceiling for a zero-down VA loan in this market — which is significant and gives you real flexibility if you're in a position to buy.
VA loans are one of the most powerful tools you have as a service member or veteran, and Alaska's market has its own quirks that you'll want a local expert to walk you through — property types, well and septic considerations, heating systems, and seasonal timing all matter here more than in most markets. Don't try to navigate it blind.
Reach out and I'll connect you with a military-savvy local agent who knows this market and knows how to protect your interests.
