Schools Near Fort Belvoir
Fort Belvoir has no DoDEA schools — every on-post school is run by Fairfax County Public Schools, one of the largest and most closely watched districts in the country. The elementary experience on post is solid; the picture changes once your kid ages into middle and high school off post.
On-Post Schools
Fort Belvoir has no DoDEA schools. The two elementary campuses on post — Fort Belvoir Primary School (Pre-K–2) and Fort Belvoir Upper School (3-6) — are both run directly by Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS), not the Department of Defense. FCPS has received DoDEA grant funding (including a $1.5 million STEAM grant) to support these two schools specifically because of their military-connected student population, but DoDEA doesn't operate them.
Only residents of Fort Belvoir are eligible to enroll their children at the two on-post schools.
High School: It Depends Where You Live
There's no middle or high school on post. Once your kid ages out of 6th grade, they attend off-post FCPS schools like any other Fairfax County family: Walt Whitman Middle School for grades 7-8, then Mount Vernon High School for grades 9-12.
Families living off-post entirely should confirm their specific zoning before committing to a neighborhood — Fairfax County ties enrollment to address, and some areas near Fort Belvoir (particularly toward Woodbridge) fall into Prince William County Public Schools instead, a completely separate district.
⚠ The On-Post Elementary Experience Doesn't Carry Through to High School
Fort Belvoir's two on-post elementary schools both rate a respectable 6/10 on GreatSchools — solid, DoDEA-grant-supported campuses built specifically for this community. But that doesn't carry forward: Walt Whitman Middle School rates 4/10, and Mount Vernon High School rates just 2/10, among the lowest ratings of any default-zoned high school in this guide series.
There's no election program or opt-out here the way there is at Fort Liberty — Fairfax County's size and reputation as a whole make it easy to assume every school in the district performs at the same level, and the schools your Fort Belvoir kid is actually zoned into don't reflect the county's overall reputation. If secondary school quality is a major factor for your family, it's worth researching Fairfax County's boundary map and other zones before committing to on-post or nearby off-post housing.
