Fort Knox (Army) PCS Relocation Guide
Radcliff, KY | Hardin County
Overview
Fort Knox sits in Hardin County, Kentucky, about 35 miles south of Louisville. It's one of those installations that carries a lot of name recognition — most people know it as the home of the U.S. Bullion Depository — but for the Army family PCSing here, what matters is that it's a working, well-established post with a real community built up around it. The surrounding towns are small and genuinely military-friendly, Louisville is close enough to feel like a resource without being in your backyard, and the cost of living in this part of Kentucky is reasonable compared to a lot of duty stations you may have come from. If your orders say Fort Knox, there are worse places to land.
BAH & What It Covers Here
Here are the 2026 BAH rates for Fort Knox, pulled by rank:
| Rank | With Dependents | Without Dependents |
|---|---|---|
| E-5 | $1,647/mo | $1,443/mo |
| E-6 | $2,136/mo | $1,602/mo |
| E-7 | $2,241/mo | $1,680/mo |
| O-3 | $2,421/mo | $1,956/mo |
| O-4 | $2,724/mo | $2,241/mo |
The honest truth: Kentucky's cost of living works in your favor here. BAH at most of these rates is genuinely competitive for the local rental and purchase market. Junior enlisted families will feel some budget pressure — that's real, and I won't sugarcoat it — but you're not looking at the same squeeze you'd face near, say, a coastal installation. For mid-grade NCOs and officers, your BAH gives you solid options whether you're renting or buying.
Where Families Live & Commute Times
Most Fort Knox families spread out across several small towns in Hardin County. Here's a straightforward look at what's close:
- Muldraugh — ~10 min / 4.4 miles to post. About as close as you'll get off-installation.
- Radcliff — ~11 min / 5.4 miles. This is the primary town just outside the gate. Most of the everyday conveniences are here.
- Vine Grove — ~12 min / 7.1 miles. A quiet option that a lot of families like for the slightly more suburban feel.
- Lickskillet — ~14 min / 9.1 miles.
- Flaherty — ~16 min / 10.9 miles.
- Hog Wallow — ~16 min / 11.6 miles.
None of these are long commutes. You're not going to spend your life in a car, which matters more than people think when you've got PT formation at zero-dark-thirty.
For specific neighborhood recommendations — what areas are a good fit for your family, what to be aware of, and how the current market looks — reach out and I'll connect you with a local agent who works with military families regularly.
Schools
I'm not going to hand you a list of school ratings and pretend they tell the whole story — ratings change, and what matters most depends on your kids. What I will do is point you to the right starting place: GreatSchools.org – Radcliff, KY has current listings for the area so you can do your own research and filter by what your family actually needs.
Things to Do & Area Life
Don't let the small-town surroundings fool you — Louisville is close, and it punches well above its weight for things to do.
Get outside: The area has genuinely good options for families who like to be outdoors. Bernheim Forest and Arboretum is a beautiful stretch of land worth exploring in any season. Saunders Springs Nature Preserve and Broad Run Park both offer good trail access and open space closer to the installation. Cherokee Park in Louisville rounds out the options if you want something more urban but still green.
Take in some history and culture: This is Louisville, so naturally the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory is a must — especially if you've got baseball fans in the house. The Muhammad Ali Center is genuinely moving and worth the trip. If bourbon is your thing (and you're in Kentucky, so it might become your thing), Old Forester Distilling Co. is one of Louisville's well-known stops on that front.
Stay active and catch a game: Activate Games is a great option for families looking for something interactive and fun. Lynn Family Stadium hosts Louisville City FC soccer, and Hotpoint Davis Arena rounds out the local sports scene if you want to catch live events without driving far.
The overall vibe here is unpretentious. People are friendly, the pace is manageable, and Louisville gives you a real city experience when you need it without making you live in the middle of one.
Using Your VA Loan Here
The VA loan limit for Hardin County is $832,750 — and in this market, that gives you substantial buying power. If you've never used your VA benefit before, or you used it at a previous duty station and have questions about restoring or reusing entitlement, those are all conversations worth having before you start shopping.
For current home prices, what your BAH will realistically support in a purchase scenario, and how to find an agent who understands VA financing and military timelines, reach out directly and I'll point you in the right direction.
