PCS Guide: Laughlin AFB & Del Rio, TX
Overview
Laughlin Air Force Base sits just outside Del Rio, Texas, in Val Verde County — about 150 miles west of San Antonio near the U.S.-Mexico border. It's home to the 47th Flying Training Wing, operating under Air Education and Training Command (AETC). If you're getting orders here, you're coming to one of the Air Force's primary pilot training installations, and the mission drives everything about life in this community.
Del Rio is a small border city with a genuine, unhurried character. It's not a sprawling metro, and that's actually a feature for a lot of families. Traffic is minimal, the cost of living is manageable, and the people are welcoming. That said, it's a remote assignment, so going in with realistic expectations matters. The nearest large city is San Antonio, and it's a couple of hours away. You won't have everything at your fingertips, but most families find they settle in and genuinely appreciate the pace.
BAH & What It Covers Here
Here are the 2026 BAH rates for Laughlin AFB (Val Verde County):
| Rank | With Dependents | Without Dependents |
|---|---|---|
| E-5 | $1,809/mo | $1,437/mo |
| E-6 | $2,148/mo | $1,611/mo |
| E-7 | $2,172/mo | $1,668/mo |
| O-3 | $2,202/mo | $2,022/mo |
| O-4 | $2,352/mo | $2,157/mo |
The good news is that Del Rio's cost of living is lower than most duty stations you've probably come from. BAH in this market tends to be competitive with what's actually available locally, which is a welcome change from many assignments. Whether you'll rent or buy — and how far your BAH goes — depends on the specific neighborhood and current inventory. That's a conversation worth having with someone who knows the local market. More on that at the end.
Where Families Live & Commute Times
Most families plant roots in or around Del Rio itself, with some choosing smaller communities nearby. Here's a practical look at commute distances from base:
- Val Verde Park — ~9 min / 3.8 miles. This is your closest option and a natural first stop when you're scouting the area.
- Del Rio — ~14 min / 7.4 miles. The hub of activity in the area. Most shopping, dining, and services are here.
- Amanda — ~14 min / 10.7 miles. A short commute with a bit more breathing room from town.
- Cienegas Terrace — ~22 min / 10.9 miles. Still very reasonable, and worth a look depending on what's available.
- Santiago Gomez / Felícitas Colunga — ~34 min / 16+ miles. Longer drive, but still manageable for some families depending on priorities.

Things to Do & Area Life
Del Rio and the surrounding area have more going on than people expect. Once you stop comparing it to a major metro and start exploring it for what it is, most families find plenty to keep them busy.
History & Culture The Whitehead Memorial Museum and the Fort Clark Museum are genuinely worthwhile stops — this region has deep Texas history that predates statehood. The Museum of Water is a unique local attraction that reflects the area's relationship with the Rio Grande and its water resources. If you want a taste of border culture, the Jiménez Main Square and a visit across to Quinta San Angel give you that cross-border experience that's distinct to life in this part of Texas. The Acuario Acuña Ashley is another option for families with younger kids looking for something a little different.
Outdoors & Recreation This is where Del Rio quietly wins. Amistad Reservoir sits right there — the Southwinds Recreation Area and Rough Canyon Recreational Area put boating, fishing, and water recreation practically in your backyard. For something more rugged, Kickapoo Cavern State Park is a true hidden gem — impressive cave systems and Hill Country terrain that outdoor families absolutely love. Whether you're a boater, a hiker, or just someone who needs open space, this area delivers.
Life here is quieter and more community-oriented than most assignments. Families tend to build tighter connections because of it.
Using Your VA Loan Here
The 2026 VA loan limit for Val Verde County is $832,750 — well above what you'll realistically need in this market, which means your VA benefit should be fully usable without a jumbo situation complicating things.
If you've never used your VA loan, or it's been a while, there are some nuances worth talking through — especially in a smaller market like Del Rio. For current home prices, what's realistic in your price range, and how to position a VA offer competitively, reach out directly and I'll make sure you're talking to the right people.
