PCS Relocation Guide: Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor (Silverdale, WA)

Written for military families navigating their next move to Kitsap County

Overview

Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor sits on the Kitsap Peninsula in western Washington, just outside Silverdale. It's one of the Navy's most strategically significant installations on the West Coast — home to submarine forces and a whole lot of Pacific Northwest scenery. The base straddles a genuinely beautiful part of the country: water everywhere, big evergreens, mountain views on a clear day, and a pace of life that's a little quieter than what you'd find in Seattle proper, even though the city is close enough to enjoy on a weekend.

If you're coming from somewhere flat and landlocked, this place will either win you over immediately or take a little getting used to. Most families land somewhere in between — a bit of culture shock at first, then a hard time imagining leaving when orders finally come. The rain is real. So is the beauty.

BAH & What It Covers Here

Here's where your 2026 BAH stands for the Silverdale area, so you can start running real numbers:

RankWith DependentsWithout Dependents
E-5$2,364/mo$2,091/mo
E-6$2,730/mo$2,169/mo
E-7$2,844/mo$2,265/mo
O-3$3,045/mo$2,595/mo
O-4$3,258/mo$2,847/mo

The Kitsap Peninsula housing market reflects the pull of the greater Seattle-Tacoma metro, so costs here run higher than what many families expect — especially if you're PCS'ing from the South or Midwest. Your BAH is calculated to cover median local rents, but "covers" and "comfortable" aren't always the same thing. Where you land in terms of budget, space, and commute involves a lot of moving parts specific to your family. For neighborhood-level guidance on where your BAH actually goes the furthest right now, reach out and I'll connect you with someone who knows this market inside and out.

Where Families Live & Commute Times

The communities closest to the Bangor side of the installation give you short drives and a genuine small-town feel. Here's what the commute picture looks like from the areas where families commonly settle:

  • Bangor Base area — ~6 min / 3.1 miles
  • Scandia — ~7 min / 3.0 miles
  • Pearson — ~8 min / 3.3 miles
  • Virginia — ~9 min / 4.0 miles
  • Keyport — ~9 min / 4.2 miles
  • Chico — ~11 min / 8.8 miles

Those are remarkably short commutes by any standard. Living close-in is entirely achievable here, which matters a lot when you factor in Washington winters, ferry schedules, and just wanting to be home for dinner. Each of these communities has its own character, price range, and trade-offs. If you want a straight-talk breakdown of which might fit your family's situation, that's exactly what a local military-savvy agent can help you sort through — just say the word.

Schools

Washington schools vary significantly by district, and school quality is one of the first things most military families ask about — rightfully so. Rather than give you numbers that could be out of date before your report date, I'd point you directly to GreatSchools.org's Silverdale listings for current ratings, reviews, and district boundary information. Cross-reference that with where you're considering living and you'll get a much clearer picture than any relocation guide can give you.

Things to Do & Area Life

One of the real perks of this duty station is that you're genuinely close to some outstanding places. The Kitsap Peninsula itself is peaceful and outdoors-oriented, but Seattle — with everything it offers — is accessible by ferry or by driving around the sound.

Get outside: Discovery Park and Lincoln Park are two of the best green spaces in the region, and both are the kind of places you can spend a whole afternoon without running out of trail. Seward Park and Green Lake Park are great for families with kids — easy walking, water nearby, people out enjoying themselves. Volunteer Park has a quieter, more contemplative feel. For something truly memorable, Bloedel Reserve on Bainbridge Island is a stunning landscape garden that feels nothing like a typical park — it's worth the trip.

Head into the city: Kerry Park gives you the iconic Seattle skyline view — it's the shot you've seen in every travel piece about the city, and it earns it. If you've got any interest in aviation — and given you'll be living around military assets, a lot of families do — The Museum of Flight near Seattle is world-class. Genuinely impressive, especially with kids.

Campus culture: The Quad at the University of Washington is one of the most beautiful college campuses in the country, particularly in spring. Worth an afternoon even if you have zero connection to the school. Bellevue Downtown Park rounds out the options if you're spending time on the east side of the sound.

This area rewards people who like to be outside and don't mind a little drizzle to get there.

Using Your VA Loan Here

The 2026 county VA loan limit for Kitsap County is $977,500 — which gives you meaningful purchasing power in this market, especially with no down payment requirement and no private mortgage insurance. That's a significant benefit in a high-cost area like this one.

That said, the strategy around how to use your VA loan here — what price range makes sense, what the current market conditions look like, when to move on something versus wait — isn't something I can give you in a general guide. It needs to be specific to your financial situation, your timeline, and what the local inventory is doing right now.
